Android Auto users are beginning to receive a long-awaited live speedometer feature in Google Maps, although the rollout currently appears to be limited. The update marks another step in improving the in-car navigation experience for Android users.
Google previously introduced speed limit support in Google Maps for Android Auto, but adding a live speedometer has taken considerably longer. The feature has been available on Google Maps for Android smartphones for some time and was also introduced for Apple’s CarPlay in July 2024.
According to reports shared by Android Auto users on Reddit, the live speedometer has started appearing within Google Maps. One user in Canada reported receiving the feature while using Google Maps beta version 26.29.02.946673643.
At present, there are only a small number of user reports, and the feature does not appear to be widely available. The limited rollout suggests Google is gradually expanding access before making it available to all Android Auto users.
Like many Android Auto updates, the rollout is expected to happen in phases, which means it could take some time before the live speedometer reaches users globally.
