Soon after unveiling its AI-first Search upgrades at Google I/O 2026, Google’s AI Overviews feature is reportedly facing an unusual issue. Users searching simple words like “disregard,” “ignore,” “remember,” and “stop” are seeing incomplete AI-generated responses instead of regular search definitions or summaries.
According to reports, the AI system is mistakenly treating these search terms as commands rather than normal queries. As a result, users are being shown broken responses and large blank spaces at the top of Google Search pages.
For example, searching for “disregard” reportedly triggers an AI response saying, “Understood. Message disregarded,” before leaving a large empty section on the screen. Similar behaviour has also been noticed with other action-based words across both desktop and mobile devices, although the issue appears less noticeable on smartphones.
Google has acknowledged the problem following user complaints on social media platforms. The company confirmed that the issue is linked to AI Overviews and not directly connected to the broader AI Search upgrades announced during Google I/O 2026.
A company spokesperson stated that Google is aware AI Overviews are incorrectly interpreting certain action-oriented queries and that a fix is currently being prepared for rollout.
The glitch reportedly surfaced after Google integrated its Gemini 3.5 Flash AI model into Search to power AI Mode. The feature is designed to support conversational interactions within AI Overviews. Earlier speculation suggested the issue was tied to updates in AI Mode, but Google has denied those claims.
During Google I/O 2026, the company introduced its plan to combine AI Overviews and AI Mode into a more conversational Search experience. The upgraded interface is intended to help users move smoothly between standard search results, AI-generated summaries, and follow-up AI conversations across desktop and mobile platforms.
Google also described the updated Search interface as an “intelligent search box” focused on providing contextual and assistant-style responses instead of only displaying traditional links. The company further confirmed that Gemini 3.5 Flash will become the default AI model powering AI Mode globally.
