Google is bringing small but useful updates to two of its Workspace apps, starting with a new visual indicator in Gmail. The company has added an unread dot to help users quickly identify messages that have not been opened.
On Gmail for Android, the dot appears next to the date or time of each message and is styled using Dynamic Color. It works alongside the existing bold text that highlights the sender name, subject and timestamp. The feature is rolling out through a server side update and may take time to reach all users. It follows recent design changes under Material 3 Expressive that placed each email inside a more prominent container.
Google is also enhancing Google Tasks with a new deadline option. Users can now add deadlines to their tasks through an “Add deadline” button, which appears above the usual date or time reminder option on the task details page. This allows users to assign a final due date separately from reminders.
The feature is not yet visible in all places. Deadlines do not appear in Google Calendar or on the Google Tasks homepage in the Android app, though they do show up on the tasks.google.com website. They also do not support specific time selection at this stage. The update is gradually rolling out for Google Tasks on Android and the web, and users can also add deadlines while creating tasks in Google Calendar.
These changes aim to make email management and task planning easier as Google continues refining core Workspace tools.
