Rising scepticism among Gen Z signals shift in attitudes towards AI

A recent survey conducted by Gallup, GSV Ventures, and the Walton Family Foundation highlights a shift in how Gen Z views generative AI. While this generation has historically embraced new technologies quickly, their response to AI is becoming more cautious and critical.

The study found that although many young people actively use AI, their trust in the technology is declining. Around 48% of respondents believe AI will create more risks than benefits in the workplace, reflecting growing uncertainty about its role in future careers.

The findings also show a noticeable change in sentiment over the past year. Excitement around AI has dropped by 14 percentage points, while hopefulness has fallen by 9 points. At the same time, anger towards AI has increased from 22% to 31%, and anxiety remains widespread among respondents.

Researchers noted that this shift could be significant for the tech industry, which has often relied on younger users to drive adoption of new innovations.

Concerns are not just emotional but also practical. Nearly 80% of respondents believe that relying on AI as a shortcut can make learning harder. Many feel that instead of improving creativity or critical thinking, AI could weaken these skills over time. The report also suggests that Gen Z is not fully convinced that AI delivers meaningful improvements in efficiency or creativity.

Despite these concerns, the outlook is not entirely negative. Many Gen Z students recognise that AI will play a key role in their education and careers. A growing number believe they will need AI-related skills and are confident in their ability to adapt.

The study concludes that simply providing access to AI is no longer enough. As scepticism rises and adoption stabilises, companies, educators, and policymakers will need to rebuild trust by demonstrating how AI can support, rather than replace, human capabilities.
