Elon Musk has poured cold water on speculation that SpaceX is developing an AI-powered smartphone, firmly denying reports that suggested the company had showcased a prototype device to prospective investors.

Responding to the claims on social media, Musk described them as “utterly false”, leaving little room for interpretation. His statement arrives as interest in AI-native consumer devices continues to grow, fuelled by rapid advances in generative AI and the race among technology companies to build the next major computing platform.

The speculation had sparked widespread discussion across the technology industry, with many viewing a potential AI smartphone as a logical extension of Musk’s expanding artificial intelligence ambitions. Given the growing links between his companies and ongoing investments in AI infrastructure, some observers believed a consumer device could eventually become part of a broader ecosystem.

An AI-first smartphone, if it were ever to materialise, would likely move beyond conventional mobile experiences by placing conversational AI, contextual assistance and intelligent automation at the centre of everyday interactions.

Musk’s swift denial suggests there is no official SpaceX smartphone project ready to be announced. While the company continues to focus on space exploration, satellite communications and advanced engineering, rumours surrounding a consumer hardware play appear to have outpaced reality.

The episode also highlights the intense speculation surrounding Musk’s ventures. As artificial intelligence becomes central to the strategies of major technology companies, virtually every move by firms associated with Musk is being viewed through the lens of future AI products and platforms.

For now, the idea of a SpaceX-branded AI phone remains exactly that—an idea. Until the company announces otherwise, there is no confirmed evidence that SpaceX is building or preparing to launch a smartphone.

As competition intensifies in the AI era, companies across the technology industry are expected to continue exploring new form factors and experiences.
