Hitesh Soni has joined Databricks to lead the go-to-market strategy for Lakebase in India, becoming part of the global founding team for the platform after spending 13 years at Oracle.
During his tenure at Oracle, Mr. Soni contributed to building the MySQL HeatWave business from the ground up across the Japan and Asia-Pacific (JAPAC) region. His move to Databricks marks a new phase in his career, focused on expanding the company’s presence in the data and artificial intelligence market.
Mr. Soni described the role as a category-creation opportunity at a fast-growing company. Databricks established the lakehouse category for analytics, while Lakebase marks its entry into the online transaction processing (OLTP) market, with a focus on applications built for the agentic AI era.
As AI agents increasingly develop and operate applications, databases need to become more elastic, programmable and capable of being created, branched and scaled at machine speed. Lakebase aims to address these requirements by supporting operational systems.
The platform also introduces Lake Transactional/Analytical Processing (LTAP), which brings online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) together on a unified data foundation.
Mr. Soni said the team’s priorities include product development, people and execution, with work progressing across all 3 areas. He also announced hiring plans in India, seeking professionals with database and AI expertise, adaptability, a willingness to learn and unlearn, and a builder mindset to scale operations from the ground up.
He thanked Simon Davies, Kamalkanth Tummala, Rajesh Ramdas, Narayan Chakrapani, Reuben R. and Ili Lutfiah Zalizam for their conversations throughout the recruitment process.
