As excitement builds ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a large-scale fraud operation targeting football fans through thousands of fake FIFA-related websites.
The campaign, known as “Ghost Stadium”, has been linked to more than 4,300 fraudulent domains designed to impersonate FIFA’s official online presence. According to cybersecurity findings, the operation involves multiple threat actors running several fraud schemes aimed at exploiting the growing demand for tickets, merchandise and tournament-related services.
Researchers found that many of the domains remain inactive for now and are expected to become operational as the tournament approaches. The network includes over 300 phishing websites that closely mimic FIFA’s official platform, replicating branding, login systems and user interfaces to deceive visitors into sharing sensitive information.
The fraudulent websites are being used to steal personal and financial information, sell fake tickets, promote counterfeit merchandise and conduct other forms of online fraud. Cybercriminals are also reportedly using social media advertisements and deceptive online promotions to direct users to these fake platforms.
Security experts have warned that fans searching for tickets, hospitality packages and event information face an increased risk of phishing attacks and financial scams. The scale of the operation highlights the growing threat posed by cybercriminals who often take advantage of major global sporting events to target consumers.
Authorities have advised fans to access FIFA services only through the official website and avoid clicking on suspicious links, sponsored search results or unverified advertisements. Users are also encouraged to carefully verify website addresses before entering personal or payment details.
The discovery of the Ghost Stadium network underscores the increasing sophistication of cybercrime operations and serves as a reminder for football fans to remain vigilant as the FIFA World Cup 2026 draws closer.
