China’s memory chip industry is moving into a more advanced phase, with ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) set to supply its latest LPDDR6 DRAM chips for Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship foldable smartphone.
CXMT said it has started mass production of LPDDR6, which will be used in Xiaomi’s 18 Fold. Xiaomi confirmed the partnership through its official Weibo account. The new foldable phone is scheduled to launch in September.
LPDDR6 is CXMT’s most advanced DRAM technology for mobile devices. Its adoption in Xiaomi’s upcoming phone could help narrow CXMT’s technology gap with China’s leading DRAM maker and global competitors such as Samsung and SK Hynix.
The development comes less than 1 year after CXMT began mass production of the previous-generation LPDDR5 chips. Xiaomi said the 18 Fold is expected to feature an updated version of its in-house 3-nanometre Xring O3 processor, which will support LPDDR6.
CXMT is also expanding its LPDDR6 applications beyond smartphones. In its latest results, the company said it had shipped LPDDR6 samples to customers for use in mobile devices, servers and smart cars.
The company reported a sharp turnaround in the 1st half of the year in its first earnings release since listing. Revenue surged 874% year-on-year to 150.3 billion yuan ($22.36 billion).
CXMT is also facing a separate challenge in the US. On Friday, the company sued the Pentagon over its inclusion on a list of companies that the US says are supporting China’s military. The Pentagon declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.
