The cybercrime police in Coimbatore have arrested 2 more accused in connection with a fraud case in which a trader was cheated of ₹38,000 by a group posing as officers in May this year. With the latest arrests, 4 of the 5 accused have now been taken into custody, while the police continue their search for the remaining suspect.
The arrested men have been identified as B. Sabari, 25, from Pachchapalayam, and K. Vinu, 21, from Nehru Nagar West. They were arrested by a special police team on Thursday. Earlier, on July 13, the police had arrested Sabari’s father, C. Binny, 51, along with their alleged accomplice, Kishore Kumar, 21, from Saravanampatti.
According to the cybercrime police, the accused contacted a 26-year-old trader from a north Indian state who runs a shop in Coimbatore. They allegedly posed as officers and threatened him, claiming that a case would be registered against him for watching and sharing pornographic content.
The accused reportedly collected ₹38,000 from the trader through an online transaction after assuring him that he would not be booked. The trader later realised that he had been cheated and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police.
Following an investigation, the police traced and arrested 4 of the accused. A officer also said that Sabari and Vinu have been involved in other cases. Efforts are currently underway to trace and arrest the 5th accused.
