From farms and hospitals to manufacturing and robotics, Chinese technology is increasingly being used across Africa to address resource constraints and support industrial development.

Countries including Ghana, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Africa are adopting Chinese-made agricultural drones for precision farming. The technology helps improve crop output while reducing the use of scarce resources. Chinese tools are also helping farmers cut water consumption and reduce pesticide and fertiliser use.

China’s industrial growth is moving beyond the traditional “old three” exports of clothing, furniture and appliances and the 2023 “new three” of electric vehicles, lithium batteries and solar cells. In the 1st half of 2026, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative drugs have emerged as new areas of focus.

China now accounts for at least 97% of global humanoid robot shipments. Its affordable technologies, including drones, offer options for resource-constrained African countries. Chinese industrial hardware and robotic arms are also widely used across Africa, South America and the Middle East.

The development points to a wider shift from exporting physical products toward sharing knowledge, technology and industrial capabilities. During the 1st 5 months of 2026, China exported 10.377 million robot units worth around $3 billion globally.

China is also supporting African industrialisation through research partnerships, joint laboratories and technology transfers. In healthcare, medical robotics is being introduced through China-Africa technology cooperation, helping resource-limited health systems access minimally invasive medical tools.

The China-Africa Robotic Surgery Training Center and China-Africa Endoscopic Technology Training Center are serving as specialised training and regional hubs, supporting longer-term healthcare partnerships.

The focus is also shifting toward local manufacturing. Africa has historically imported at least 70% of its essential medicines and nearly all of its vaccines. Chinese companies are now helping build, equip and operate drug manufacturing facilities in Africa.

In Ethiopia, a Chinese company is producing IV bags, injectables and essential generic oral solid tablets to meet domestic demand.

The need is particularly significant in healthcare. Africa accounts for nearly 95% of global malaria cases and 95% of malaria deaths. China is providing African public health officials with AI-powered tools for disease surveillance, tracking and outbreak prediction.

Chinese pharmaceutical companies are also working with local firms in Nigeria to produce HIV treatments and in Cote d’Ivoire to raise production of antimalarial and antibiotic medicines to up to 5 million tablets annually.

China’s latest industrial transformation is therefore creating opportunities beyond technology imports. Agriculture, robotics, healthcare and manufacturing are increasingly becoming areas where technology transfer and local capacity building could shape Africa’s long-term industrial development.
