China plans Tianwen-3 mission on Mars race with ambitious sample return mission

In a significant step for space exploration, China has announced that its Tianwen-3 mission aims to collect and return soil samples from Mars by 2031. The mission is scheduled to launch in 2028 and plans to gather at least 500gm of Martian material.

This mission builds on the success of Tianwen-1, which successfully landed a rover on Mars in 2021, marking a major milestone for China’s space program.

China selects 5 international experiments
Tianwen-3 will not be limited to China alone. The mission will include international collaboration, with 5 global experiments selected to be part of the project. However, detailed information about these experiments has not been disclosed yet.

At the same time, NASA and the European Space Agency are working together on a Mars Sample Return program. This joint effort is currently facing delays.

If the Tianwen-3 mission proceeds as planned, China could become the first country to bring back samples from Mars. This achievement could reshape future space exploration and deepen scientific understanding of the Red Planet.
