The initiative aims to strengthen India’s cybersecurity capabilities with indigenous AI models tailored for protecting critical infrastructure and sensitive government systems.
In a significant step towards strengthening India’s sovereign artificial intelligence ecosystem, the Central government has tasked homegrown AI developers Sarvam AI and BharatGen with developing advanced cybersecurity capabilities for their foundation models. The move is aimed at enhancing the country’s ability to secure critical infrastructure using indigenous AI technologies.
The initiative comes as India seeks to reduce its dependence on foreign frontier AI models for sensitive cybersecurity applications. Instead of relying exclusively on global AI platforms, the government is pursuing a parallel strategy of strengthening domestic AI capabilities for national security and critical infrastructure protection.
According to officials, the enhanced models will be designed to support cybersecurity functions such as vulnerability detection, code analysis, threat identification and remediation. These capabilities are expected to help government agencies respond more effectively to evolving cyber threats targeting sectors including energy, banking, telecommunications and public services.
The models are expected to operate on dedicated government-controlled compute infrastructure, ensuring that sensitive cybersecurity workloads and data remain within a secure and isolated environment. The approach aligns with India’s broader focus on data sovereignty and trusted AI deployment for strategic use cases.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has already been evaluating a mix of open-source and indigenous AI models to assess their effectiveness in cybersecurity operations. Officials indicated that the current ecosystem has demonstrated encouraging progress, while highlighting the need for more specialised capabilities that can meet the demands of large-scale cyber defence.
The collaboration with Sarvam AI and BharatGen also complements the government’s wider IndiaAI Mission, which aims to build domestic AI infrastructure, encourage indigenous innovation and develop foundation models tailored to India’s requirements.
While the government has not announced a timeline for the rollout of the upgraded models, the initiative marks another milestone in India’s efforts to build AI capabilities for strategic sectors. As cyber threats continue to become more sophisticated, the focus on indigenous AI is expected to play a growing role in strengthening the country’s digital security landscape.
