The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a former bank official along with 2 others in connection with a “digital arrest” cyber fraud case, underlining the rising threat of impersonation-based scams in India.
The accused include Dubbaka Mahesh, a former assistant manager at IndusInd Bank, along with Rajesh Khanna and Vayala Srinivas.
The case involves a senior citizen who was allegedly defrauded of over ₹1.6 crore after being threatened with a fake “digital arrest.” Fraudsters impersonated officials and used intimidation tactics to create urgency, forcing the victim to transfer money.
Investigations revealed that the money was routed through a bank account fraudulently opened in the name of a company. The funds were then layered and moved across multiple channels to hide their origin.
As part of the probe, the CBI conducted searches at 5 locations across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Officials seized key documents and electronic devices, which are now being analysed to uncover the broader network behind the fraud.
The involvement of a former bank official has raised concerns over possible misuse of banking systems in enabling cybercrime. Authorities are examining how such accounts were opened and used for illegal transactions.
“Digital arrest” scams have become a growing cybercrime trend in India. In such cases, fraudsters impersonate law enforcement agencies, issue fake notices or warrants, and keep victims under constant surveillance through calls or video interactions to extort money.
The CBI has clarified that there is no legal concept of “digital arrest” and has urged citizens not to panic or comply with such threats. People are advised to verify suspicious communications and report incidents through official cybercrime channels.
The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected as agencies work to dismantle the wider network involved.
