OpenAI is set to see another senior leadership change as Brad Lightcap prepares to leave the company and launch a new venture. The move comes as the ChatGPT maker continues to expand amid rising demand for AI and prepares for its next phase of growth.
“Over the last few months, I’ve been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success. I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period,” Lightcap said in a post on X.
Responding to Lightcap, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he was “excited to work together on what’s next.”
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and previously worked with Altman at venture capital firm Y Combinator. In April, he moved from his position as Chief Operating Officer to a role focused on special projects.
OpenAI said Lightcap’s responsibilities had already shifted in recent months away from the day-to-day management of larger teams and organisations. As a result, the company does not expect his departure to significantly affect those teams.
His exit follows a similar leadership change at OpenAI. In July, Fidji Simo, the company’s CEO of AGI Deployment, announced that she would step away from her full-time position and move to a part-time advisory role after an extended medical leave.
Lightcap’s departure comes at a significant stage for OpenAI as the company continues to scale its AI operations and prepares for its next phase amid strong demand for its technology.
