Driven by a cooperative-first approach, Bharat Taxi has emerged as the world’s largest driver-owned mobility cooperative, with more than 35 lakh users and over 6 lakh drivers across India. The platform operates on a zero-commission model for drivers while offering passengers fares that are up to 15% lower than conventional ride-hailing services.

Launched on February 5 by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Bharat Taxi is built around the vision of empowering drivers as stakeholders rather than service providers. According to a release from the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, the platform represents a blend of technology, ownership, and cooperative-led growth.

Jayen Mehta, Chairman of Bharat Taxi and Managing Director of Amul, said, “By operationalising a driver-owned model, Bharat Taxi ensures that 100% of ride earnings go directly to the drivers. It is not just restoring dignity but also setting a global benchmark for cooperative-led growth in mobility.”

The platform is already making an impact on driver earnings. According to the release, average monthly incomes have increased by an estimated 25% to 30% for drivers who joined Bharat Taxi. Driver Praveen Thakor shared, “Working with other platforms was no longer profitable. But after joining ‘Bharat Taxi’, we are getting excellent rates and a great response. By being part of this model, any driver can earn a handsome income and secure their family’s future.”

Passengers are also benefiting from the platform’s transparent pricing structure. Unlike dynamic pricing models, Bharat Taxi offers stable fares, helping reduce commuting costs. Driver Janak Barot said, “There is ‘zero commission’ here, and payments are credited directly to our accounts; we truly feel like owners. Against the ₹30/km charged by other companies, we offer an affordable rate of ₹17-18, making it highly beneficial for the customers too.”

The cooperative currently has more than 1 lakh drivers in Gujarat alone and is expanding beyond Ahmedabad and Surat, with Vadodara identified as its next major growth hub. To strengthen adoption, the company is implementing direct outreach initiatives in IT parks, residential communities, and airports.

The platform also features direct SOS integration with Gujarat Police, dedicated connectivity to pilgrimage destinations such as Somnath and Dwarkadhish, and an Integrated Transit System developed in collaboration with Metro, GSRTC, and the Airport Authority. Additionally, more than 10,000 drivers have received training in digital literacy and soft skills to enhance service quality.
