A cybercrime investigation in Bengaluru has led to the registration of a case against a private firm employee accused of providing his banking facilities to cybercriminals for routing funds obtained through online scams.
The case was registered by the Whitefield Cyber Crime Police following a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Manjunath B.P. on Friday. During an investigation into suspicious financial transactions, officials discovered that a private bank account had been used to receive money linked to multiple cyber fraud cases across the country.
The investigation revealed that cybercrime complaints connected to the account had been registered in several locations, including Bengaluru South, South East Cyber Crime Police Station, Avalahalli, Kerala, Palakkad, Kozhikode Rural, Kolhapur, Ramanathapuram, Delhi, Pune, Raichur and other regions.
According to police findings, the account was allegedly functioning as a money mule account, used to receive and transfer funds generated through cyber fraud activities. Investigators suspect that the account holder knowingly provided his bank account, ATM card, mobile number and internet banking credentials to cybercriminals to facilitate illegal transactions.
Police identified the accused as Murali G. Reddygopal, 37, a resident of Murthinagar Cross in Bengaluru.
The probe found that funds obtained through cyber scams were deposited into the account and later transferred to other bank accounts or withdrawn as cash through ATMs. Authorities also stated that the account had already been placed under debit freeze and lien marking due to its suspected connection with cybercrime activities.
Based on the investigation, a case has been registered under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, along with Sections 319(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the accused’s involvement and identify other individuals who may be part of the cyber fraud network.
