At a key industry event, Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined a vision to transform Visakhapatnam into a major AI hub, calling it “AI Patnam” while positioning India as a trusted global partner for electronics and AI supply chains.
Speaking at the Google Cloud India AI Hub Groundbreaking Ceremony, he said, “Like Cyberabad, it will become AI Patnam,” referring to the AI Data Hub being developed in the city.
The announcement comes alongside Google’s plan to invest $15 billion in a 1 GW hyperscale AI data centre project in Visakhapatnam, one of the largest proposed technology investments in India.
Framing this as part of a broader technological shift, Vaishnaw said, “When the entire world is moving towards a totally new cycle of technology, we should take the lead in this technology,” adding that India had “missed out many cycles” in the past.
He also highlighted changing global dynamics, stating, “Entire world is looking for a trusted partner where IP rights will be respected, where the security concerns will be met.” He added that “that kind of supply chain… is possible only in India.”
Encouraging global companies to deepen their presence, Vaishnaw said, “Please consider India as your trusted value chain and supply chain partner,” noting the government’s focus on “delivery… execution… transparency.”
The minister also pointed to infrastructure developments, including subsea connectivity, noting that three cables landing in Visakhapatnam would provide critical support for future growth and be “a big, big, big thing for our country.”
