India’s growing role in Apple’s global manufacturing network is creating new opportunities, but it also comes with greater responsibility. As Apple shifts more production to India, protecting its highly confidential supply chain has become as important as manufacturing its devices.

The spotlight intensified after sensitive supplier information and images of the unreleased iPhone 18 Pro models were reportedly leaked following a ransomware attack on Tata Electronics, one of Apple’s fastest-growing manufacturing partners.

The reported leak is significant because it allegedly includes detailed maps linking hundreds of iPhone 18 Pro components to specific suppliers. Apple intentionally keeps this information confidential, even though it publishes its supplier list annually, as revealing component sourcing could expose its procurement strategy and weaken its competitive advantage.

The leaked files reportedly also contain photographs of devices undergoing drop testing at Tata Electronics’ facilities earlier this year, along with documents carrying Apple’s confidential markings and internal product code names.

The incident comes at a crucial time as Apple continues expanding manufacturing beyond China, with India becoming a major production hub. Tata Electronics has rapidly strengthened its position after acquiring Wistron’s India operations and taking over Pegatron’s Indian manufacturing business, making it one of Apple’s largest manufacturing partners in the country.

Industry estimates suggest India could account for around 25% of global iPhone production this year, compared to only a small single-digit share a few years ago. This growth has been supported by significant investments from Apple, its suppliers and government incentives aimed at strengthening India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.

The reported breach also arrives as Apple faces rising component costs and prepares for the launch of the iPhone 18 series, making supply chain security even more critical.

Apple has reportedly launched an investigation alongside Tata Electronics. The supplier has tightened internal access controls and initiated a forensic audit following the incident.

While the authenticity of the leaked documents is still being examined, the episode highlights that India’s future as a global manufacturing hub depends not only on production capacity but also on maintaining world-class security standards to protect valuable intellectual property.
