Apple is reportedly preparing to use a combination of on-device processing and cloud-based infrastructure to power upcoming artificial intelligence features across its ecosystem.

According to reports, the company may rely on Google Cloud and Nvidia infrastructure for certain advanced AI functions, even as it continues promoting privacy-focused on-device AI through its Apple Intelligence strategy.

The report stated that Apple is using a version of Google’s Gemini large language model to train smaller AI models that can run directly on iPhones, iPads and Macs through a process known as distillation.

This approach is expected to help Apple deliver AI-powered experiences locally on devices without depending completely on cloud servers.

At the same time, Apple is reportedly exploring acquisitions to strengthen its on-device AI capabilities. One of the companies being considered is Liquid AI, a startup focused on efficient local AI processing.

Despite these efforts, reports suggest Apple’s current Private Cloud Compute infrastructure may not be powerful enough to handle larger AI workloads independently. The full Gemini model reportedly contains trillions of parameters, requiring significantly greater computing power.

As a result, Apple may use Google Cloud infrastructure along with Nvidia AI hardware to process more advanced AI requests, especially for newer Siri capabilities.

Some Siri-related queries are expected to run through Google Cloud using a licensed Gemini model from Google, according to the report.

Apple has also reportedly approved Nvidia’s confidential computing technology to improve security and privacy for cloud-based AI processing. The technology encrypts data and AI models while they are processed inside GPUs, helping strengthen privacy protections even during cloud operations.

Although this process may slightly reduce performance speed, it could help Apple maintain its privacy commitments while supporting more demanding AI features.

The report added that Apple is likely to continue using its “Private Cloud Compute” branding even if some AI workloads are processed using external cloud infrastructure.

Apple is expected to announce its next set of AI features during WWDC, which begins on June 8.
