Alcatel has re-entered India’s smartphone market after seven years

Following a seven-year break, French technology giant Alcatel has returned to the Indian smartphone market with the goal of ranking among the top three brands in the nation within the next three years, according to a senior company official. Nxtcell India, which has exclusive brand clearance for Alcatel in India and a few other countries, released the company’s V3 smartphone series in India on Tuesday.

“India is a big market with multiple consumer segments. Our long-term goal for India is to be among the top three players in terms of market share in the next three years.

“Not only in smartphones, but we will also be building an integrated consumer tech ecosystem in India — we will have multiple product categories,” Nxtcell India Chief Business Officer Atul Vivek told Media.

To start producing Alcatel-branded handsets locally in India, NxtCell India has teamed up with Padget Electronics, a Dixon Technologies subsidiary. To restore the French tech name in the cutthroat Indian mobile phone industry, NxtCell has pledged an initial investment of USD 30 million (about Rs 260 crore).

Alcatel intends to start producing around 2 million devices annually in India. The firm intends to grow to neighboring countries including Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the MENA region, even though manufacturing now serves the home market.
