A developer has recreated one of the most memorable magical objects from the Harry Potter series using artificial intelligence. Inspired by Tom Riddle’s diary, the project transforms the reMarkable Paper Pro into an interactive AI notebook that can respond to handwritten questions in animated handwriting, creating an experience that closely resembles the fictional diary.

The project was developed by Maxime Rivest using the reMarkable Paper Pro and Anthropic’s AI model, Fable 5. Instead of typing into a chatbot, users write a question on the tablet with a stylus. After a brief pause, the handwritten text gradually disappears, as if the page has absorbed the ink.

Moments later, the AI writes its response directly on the screen in animated cursive handwriting. The reply appears stroke by stroke, creating the impression that someone is writing back in real time. After some time, the AI-generated response also fades away, preparing the notebook for the next conversation.

Behind the scenes, the tablet captures an image of the handwritten text and sends it to a vision-enabled large language model. The AI interprets the handwriting, generates a response, and returns it to the device, where it is displayed as animated handwriting on the E-Ink screen.

The project supports multiple AI backends, including OpenAI-compatible APIs such as OpenAI, OpenRouter, and Groq, along with compatible local AI servers. According to the developer, the first part of the response can begin appearing in about 1 second, even before the complete answer has been generated.

Although the experience appears seamless, the setup process is designed for advanced users. The project currently works only on the reMarkable Paper Pro. Installation requires enabling developer mode, accessing the device through SSH, installing third-party launcher software, and making system-level modifications. The software also runs with root privileges, and the developer has warned that incorrect installation could affect the device. Future software updates may also impact compatibility.

The project has drawn attention from both Harry Potter fans and AI enthusiasts because it closely recreates the experience of Tom Riddle’s diary from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. By combining disappearing handwriting, AI-generated responses, and an E-Ink display, it showcases how AI interfaces are moving beyond traditional chat windows to create more natural and immersive interactions.
