Adani’s $1.2 billion copper plant struggles to scale amid technical and supply constraints

Early-stage challenges have surfaced for Adani Group as its large copper facility works to stabilise operations within its first year.

As per a report by Bloomberg, the group’s $1.2 billion copper plant has encountered multiple technical issues since being commissioned around 10 months ago, raising concerns over output and efficiency.

The plant, positioned as a key step in strengthening copper supply outside China, has reportedly faced engineering-related problems that have impacted production. It has yet to generate meaningful volumes of copper and was also shut for repair work in late March.

Production data indicates that the facility produced around 94,000 tonnes of refined copper between April last year and February this year, significantly below its designed capacity of 500,000 tonnes per year.

These challenges come on top of earlier issues, including commissioning delays and global shortages of copper concentrate, which have affected raw material availability.

The project is a crucial part of India’s efforts to reduce dependence on imports and boost domestic metal production. However, the initial setbacks underline the complexity involved in scaling large industrial operations amid technical constraints and global supply pressures.
