Instagram iOS update boosts video quality with Dolby Vision HDR support

Instagram app on iOS now fully supports Dolby Vision HDR videos and ambient viewing environment (amve) metadata, marking a major upgrade in video quality on the platform. The parent company confirmed that HDR videos recorded on iPhones will now keep important data like amve and Dolby Vision specifications. This ensures more accurate colour, brightness, and contrast across different iPhones and displays.

Why This Change Matters

Instagram has supported High Dynamic Range (HDR) video uploads and playback for iOS devices since 2022. However, the previous process did not preserve the specific Dolby Vision or amve metadata embedded by iPhones.

According to the firm’s engineering team, the older workflow used encoding systems that threw away this iPhone generated metadata. As a result, HDR videos often looked washed out or had inaccurate colours when viewed in low light or varied ambient conditions.

With this new update, the full metadata is kept from the moment of upload, through server processing, and all the way to end user playback. This allows for proper Dolby Vision rendering on all supported devices.

Benefit for Creators and Viewers

For iPhone users who capture HDR video—which many newer iPhones record in Dolby Vision—the upgrade means their uploaded content is now much more likely to look as intended.

  • The amve metadata allows the viewing device to adjust the contrast and brightness based on the actual ambient lighting in the room.
  • Dolby Vision metadata helps the app and device show enhanced dynamic range, more vivid colour, and better brightness on compatible displays.

For creators, this makes sharing high quality HDR content more reliable. For viewers, the playback quality on compatible devices should see a visible improvement, making videos much more true to life.
