Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is gearing up for a major service upgrade as it moves closer to launching Voice over Wi Fi along with new plans designed for women and students. A top official confirmed that the company is nearing the final stage after running successful pilots.
Robert Jerard Ravi, Chairman of BSNL, said in an interview with a common publication that “Live pilots for VoWi Fi are ongoing in two zones, and performance has been strong in indoor and low signal environments. Pending a final go ahead, we will make the service available shortly to our customers.”
VoWi Fi works on the IP Multimedia Subsystem core and supports packet voice service through Wi Fi. It acts as a complement to VoLTE and is especially helpful in areas with weak mobile signals. Ravi said, “Even if a subscriber has a 4G SIM and no signal, they can still place calls over VoWi Fi. The only requirement is to be a BSNL customer.”
The pilot service is active in select BSNL zones and has been tested on various handsets that support Wi Fi calling. With this rollout, BSNL will stand alongside major private operators that already offer the same feature. The service is expected to improve indoor coverage, strengthen the network experience, and raise customer satisfaction.
BSNL has also adopted artificial intelligence to improve customer support. The company uses the Vaani chatbot in its call centre operations to handle consumer issues. Its Self Care app has been upgraded to offer faster and more user friendly assistance. The company is also onboarding Business Associates digitally to expand SIM distribution.
Along with the VoWi Fi launch, BSNL is working on a range of initiatives to simplify and improve its services. The recharge system called BSNL REX or BreX has been redesigned to give customers a clear and simple set of choices. The telco is planning promotional offers aimed at students, farmers and other groups. These include thematic recharges that allow customers to support social causes.
The company is preparing new plans for women and students that will offer more talk time and longer validity. Ravi said, “We intend to launch a new scheme for women and children in the near future. This remains one of our priority targets.”
BSNL has recently introduced several offers, including the one rupee Freedom plan that helps customers try the new BSNL 4G network with ease. These efforts come alongside the rapid rollout of nearly one lakh next generation 4G sites built with homegrown technology by a consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services.
