WhatsApp set to introduce new privacy feature for iPhone users

WhatsApp is introducing a new security feature designed to protect users from targeted hacking attempts. According to reports from a common source, the feature, called “Strict Account Settings,” was recently spotted in the latest iOS beta version (25.33.10.70). It aims to provide stronger account protection for individuals considered high-risk.

Located under Privacy > Advanced, the new option allows users to enable several automatic safeguards. WhatsApp stated that this setting is meant for users who believe they may be vulnerable to cyberattacks, such as journalists, activists, and public figures. The feature prioritises security over convenience, which may slightly limit certain messaging functions.

Key protections included

When activated, the “Strict Account Settings” feature applies several enhanced measures to reduce the risk of digital threats:

  • Blocks media and attachments from unknown senders
  • Silences calls from unfamiliar numbers
  • Restricts group invitations to known contacts
  • Disables link previews in messages
  • Enforces two-step verification for added security
  • Notifies users when encryption keys change
  • Locks selected privacy settings to prevent unauthorised modifications

These measures aim to protect users from phishing, impersonation, and other forms of online intrusion by limiting potential attack vectors.

Beta testing and rollout

Currently, the feature is being tested on iOS through TestFlight and is expected to expand to a wider audience in the coming weeks. Although WhatsApp has not confirmed a release date for Android users, similar security options are anticipated soon. The company emphasised that while most users may not require this level of protection, the feature provides critical safeguards for those in sensitive or high-exposure roles. Users will have the flexibility to turn the feature on or off at any time.

WhatsApp expands to Apple Watch

In addition to the new security setting, WhatsApp has launched its first standalone app for Apple Watch. The app enables users to access and manage their chats directly from the smartwatch without needing their iPhone. Key features include the ability to record and send voice messages, receive call notifications, view complete message previews, and use message reactions. The update significantly improves functionality, bringing WhatsApp on the Apple Watch closer to the experience offered by Apple’s native messaging app.
