Google Maps has announced 10 new updates for users in India, powered by advanced artificial intelligence and India-first innovations designed to enhance navigation, safety and travel experiences. At the core of the update is the integration of Google’s AI model, Gemini, with real-world information from Maps, introducing conversational, hands-free assistance for drivers.
AI-powered navigation with Gemini
The new update enables users to interact with Google Maps using natural language while driving. With Gemini in navigation, users can ask questions like “the nearest petrol pump” or “find a restaurant nearby,” and even link to other apps, such as adding meetings to Calendar. Gemini will also analyse reviews and web data to provide helpful local tips, such as advice on bargaining at Delhi’s Dilli Haat or highlighting top-rated food stalls.
Users can now ask specific questions about places, such as whether a location “has parking” or “must-visit stalls,” with Gemini summarising answers based on photos, reviews and online content.
Enhanced safety and alerts
Google Maps is introducing several safety and alert features tailored to India’s road network. Accident-prone area alerts will notify users visually and audibly as they approach high-risk zones, launching first in Gurugram, Cyberabad, Chandigarh and Faridabad. Speed limits will now be displayed alongside the speedometer in nine major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.
Additionally, Android users in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore will receive automatic traffic alerts about road disruptions or delays, even when not actively navigating.
A new collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will provide near real-time updates on road closures, repairs and amenities like restrooms and petrol stations.
India-first travel utility updates
For India’s large two-wheeler user base, Maps now allows custom navigation icons called ‘Navatars,’ where users can select from motorbike, scooter and sports bike options in eight colours. New voice navigation support in nine Indian languages will improve guidance through complex flyovers on both Android and iOS.
In addition, Android users can now save metro tickets from Delhi, Bangalore, Kochi and Chennai directly to Google Wallet, making them easily accessible through Maps.
The Gemini-powered navigation features and other updates will roll out to Android and iOS users across India in the coming weeks.
