MIAL begins process to demolish defunct Terminal 1A as part of major Mumbai airport revamp

Mumbai International Airport Limited has moved ahead with its plan to upgrade Terminal 1 by initiating steps to demolish the long unused Terminal 1A building. This comes as part of a wider redevelopment effort led by Adani Airports to expand capacity and modernise the city’s domestic terminal.

A demolition notice for Terminal 1A, along with the old chiller plant and a temporary shed, was issued after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority granted its No Objection Certificate in September. MIAL has also begun inviting Expressions of Interest for the refurbishment of the existing Terminal 1.

According to an official involved in the project, the current Terminal 1 structure will not be taken down until the second phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport is completed in 2029. “We will not demolish the existing Terminal 1 till the second phase of the Navi Mumbai airport is completed to ensure there is no disruption to air traffic, but when we do, we would want some sort of back up at Mumbai airport to take some of the load. That’s why we are taking steps towards demolishing the defunct Terminal 1A now,” the official said.

Terminal 1A was shut in 2016, and in 2017 Terminal 1B was renamed as Terminal 1 to avoid confusion for passengers.

Adani Airports announced earlier this year that it plans to redevelop Terminal 1 to increase its passenger handling capacity by 42 percent, aiming to manage up to 20 million passengers annually. The company had indicated that demolition of Terminal 1 would begin in phases from November.

The newly inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to ease congestion while Terminal 1 undergoes refurbishment. Its first phase, already completed, will support 20 million passengers per year and handle 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo. Additional terminals are expected by 2029, 2032 and between 2035 and 2036.

The decision to demolish Terminal 1 also follows a structural audit by a technical institute that identified corrosion, seepage and cracks, after which the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority stated in March that demolition was necessary for public safety.
