Apple to use Google’s Gemini AI model to power revamped Siri

Apple plans to use a 1.2 trillion parameter artificial intelligence model developed by Alphabet’s Google to enhance a new version of its Siri voice assistant, according to a report on Wednesday. The two companies are finalising a deal that would see Apple pay around $1 billion annually for access to Google’s advanced AI technology.

The report said Apple will rely on Google’s Gemini model temporarily while it continues to develop its own AI systems. With 1.2 trillion parameters, Google’s Gemini model is significantly more complex than Apple’s current AI systems, making it a major step forward in Siri’s capabilities.

Siri has long faced criticism for lagging behind competitors such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant when it comes to handling complex commands and integrating with third-party applications. The new partnership aims to address those limitations by bringing advanced generative AI capabilities to Apple’s ecosystem.

Google declined to comment, while Apple did not respond to requests for comment. The report clarified that the partnership will not integrate Google’s AI search into Apple’s operating systems and is separate from previous talks about embedding Gemini directly into Siri as a chatbot.

In March, Apple had said that AI improvements to Siri would be delayed until 2026 without specifying the reason. Meanwhile, rival companies have been actively enhancing their voice assistants with AI features. Google has already integrated its Gemini model into its assistant, and Amazon has introduced a new AI-powered version of Alexa earlier this year.

Apple recently made internal leadership changes to accelerate its AI efforts. Mike Rockwell now leads Siri’s development after CEO Tim Cook reportedly lost confidence in former AI head John Giannandrea’s ability to deliver results on time.

This partnership marks a major shift in Apple’s AI strategy as it seeks to strengthen Siri’s performance while continuing to build its own in-house AI systems for the future.
