Gurugram police have reported two recent incidents highlighting the growing threat of cybercrime in the city. In the first case, Vinod Kumar, a resident of Vishnu Garden, fell victim after receiving a wedding invitation on WhatsApp from an unknown number on September 4. Curious, he clicked the link, unknowingly allowing hackers to access his phone.
By the time Kumar realised the breach, cybercriminals had made three unauthorised transactions, draining nearly Rs 97,000 from his bank account. Following the incident, Kumar filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime West Police Station, which has registered a case and initiated an investigation.
Gurugram authorities have warned the public to exercise caution and avoid clicking on links from unknown sources, as cybercriminals continuously devise new ways to exploit unsuspecting users.
In a separate incident, a Gurugram couple lost over Rs 1.3 lakh after being duped by a woman posing as a talent scout for a reputed TV advertising agency. The woman, identifying herself as Anjali, approached the couple outside Ambience Mall, claiming their six-year-old daughter, Pratiksha, had been selected for multiple television ads involving celebrities such as Alia Bhatt, Allu Arjun, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s daughter, Jiiva.
Over multiple interactions, she convinced the parents to transfer money, starting with Rs 32,000 for a portfolio album and later Rs 1 lakh for a purported ad shoot. When the couple realised the deception, they reported the matter to the Gurugram Cyber Crime Unit, which has registered a case and launched an investigation.
These cases demonstrate the increasing sophistication of cybercriminal tactics in Gurugram. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, avoid sharing personal information or transferring money to unverified contacts, and report suspicious activity immediately to police.
