Amazon Launches Vega OS, a New Linux-Based Operating System for Fire TVs

Amazon has announced Vega OS, a new operating system for its Fire TV devices, marking a shift from its previous Android-based Fire OS.

For years, Amazon’s Fire TV lineup has run on Fire OS, built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Recent rumors suggested the company was planning to introduce a new in-house OS, and now it has confirmed those plans.

In a blog post, Amazon described Vega OS as “responsive and highly efficient.” Unlike Fire OS, which was Android-based, Vega OS is built on Linux and uses React Native, a popular JavaScript framework that allows developers to create new applications more easily. However, Amazon is still working to attract app developers to the new platform.

The first device to feature Vega OS out of the box is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, launched last week. This streaming stick supports 4K resolution and HDR10+ for improved video quality. Amazon also introduced a Cloud App program to help developers port their Android apps to Vega OS. The company will cover the associated cloud streaming costs for nine months.

Vega OS does not allow sideloading of apps, so users can install apps only from the Amazon Appstore. The operating system will support game streaming services, including Xbox Gaming and Luna. While new devices will come with Vega OS pre-installed, older Fire TV devices running Android-powered Fire OS will continue to be supported.

With Vega OS, Amazon aims to provide a smoother and more efficient experience for Fire TV users while creating a new environment for developers to expand the platform.
