Microsoft Tests Copilot Portraits with 40 Avatars for Human-like AI Voice Chats

Microsoft is testing a new feature called Copilot Portraits that gives its chatbot a more human-like presence during real-time voice conversations. The feature is being rolled out through Copilot Labs in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

Copilot Portraits introduces 40 stylised avatars that can display facial expressions while speaking, making AI interactions feel more natural and less mechanical. Each avatar is designed to show head movements, lip-sync accuracy, and expressions that closely match spoken words. Unlike photorealistic images, the avatars are intentionally stylised to avoid looking too real, creating a balance between relatability and visual comfort.

The technology behind Portraits is VASA-1, developed by Microsoft Research. It can generate natural expressions and speech movements from a single image without the need for complex 3D modelling. The feature builds on Microsoft’s earlier Copilot Appearances, launched in July, which had more cartoon-like designs. Portraits, however, take a step closer to human-inspired visuals intended to make conversations smoother and more engaging.

Explaining the motivation behind the update, Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman shared on X: “We’ve heard from some users that they would feel more comfortable talking to a face when using voice.” By pairing a chosen avatar with a voice, users can simulate a face-to-face interaction during AI conversations.

The move comes as competitors also experiment with personalised AI avatars. Another platform recently launched 3D chatbot avatars, including anime-inspired characters, some with adult-themed modes.

Microsoft is limiting access during its early rollout. Only users above 18 can try Copilot Portraits, with daily and session usage caps in place. The company is also adding clear signals during interactions to remind users they are talking to AI, ensuring transparency as the feature expands.
