OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that artificial general intelligence, also known as AGI, could soon replace around 40 per cent of the tasks people perform today. In a recent interview with a leading German newspaper, Altman spoke about the future of AI, its impact on jobs and the challenges of developing superintelligent systems.
When asked when AGI will become smarter than humans in every aspect, Altman explained that GPT5 is already more capable than him and many others. He added that AGI might arrive before the end of this decade. “If we don’t have models [by 2030] that are extraordinarily capable and do things that we ourselves cannot do, I’d be very surprised,” he said.
Altman also addressed concerns about the effect of AI on jobs. Rather than focusing on job losses, he suggested it is more accurate to consider how tasks may shift. “I can easily imagine a world where 30, 40 per cent of the tasks that happen in the economy today get done by AI in the not very distant future,” he stated.
During the conversation, Altman was asked about the comparison made by AI researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky, who said the relationship between AGI and humans could be like that between humans and ants. Altman disagreed, saying instead that AGI would treat humans like a “loving parent.” His view aligns with AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun, who have emphasised the importance of building AI systems with “maternal instincts” to ensure they care for people.
Altman also warned of potential risks, noting that AGI could bring consequences that are not yet understood. He stressed that aligning AI with human values will be essential to guide its development responsibly.
