Perplexity launches Comet Browser with AI features to challenge Google Chrome

Perplexity AI has introduced Comet Browser, a new AI-powered web browser designed to rival Google Chrome by combining advanced artificial intelligence with a familiar browsing experience. Built on the Chromium framework, Comet supports popular extensions and bookmarks while adding intelligent tools to boost productivity, research, and multitasking.

Unlike traditional browsers, Comet is more than just a tool for viewing websites. It can summarise content, automate tasks, manage workflows, and provide personalised recommendations. The browser comes with a built-in AI sidebar assistant that acts as a personal helper, able to draft emails, manage schedules, perform multi-step tasks, and even complete approved transactions without the need to switch tabs or apps.

Being Chromium-based, it provides a seamless transition for Chrome users as it supports extensions and bookmarks. Comet also introduces workspaces that allow users to organise tabs, projects, and tasks, reducing clutter and maintaining context during complex activities. Its AI system suggests articles, products, and content based on user behaviour, creating a personalised browsing experience.

Through agentic AI, Comet can handle automated tasks such as booking meetings, comparing prices, or converting web pages into emails. It also includes dashboards for task management, email prioritisation, real-time fact-checking, and content creation tools. For researchers and creators, it supports summarisation, writing assistance, and multimedia generation.

Currently, Comet Browser is available in India for Perplexity Pro users on Windows and macOS. Android users can pre-order, while iOS support is being developed. To encourage adoption, Perplexity has partnered with Bharti Airtel to offer a free one-year Pro subscription to millions of users.

Getting started is simple. Users need to sign up or log in to their Perplexity account with a Pro or Max plan, download Comet from the official website or Android pre-order link, and then enable the AI sidebar assistant. From there, they can explore features such as summarising articles, comparing prices, or managing workflows directly in the browser.

Perplexity has stated that Comet is built to improve online productivity by automating routine tasks, reducing tab overload, and supporting research and content creation, all while protecting user privacy with encrypted local data storage.

Positioned as a next-generation AI-native browser, Comet could set new standards in browsing and push established players like Google and Microsoft to speed up their own AI innovations.
