OpenAI CEO Sam Altman meets UAE President to strengthen cooperation in Artificial Intelligence

OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman met with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi to explore closer cooperation in artificial intelligence research and practical applications. According to a state news agency, the meeting at Qasr Al Shati focused on aligning OpenAI’s work with the UAE’s ambition to create a strong AI ecosystem. The UAE aims to support its national development goals, build a knowledge-based economy, and enhance its global role in AI.

Altman praised the UAE’s AI vision and its commitment to international collaboration. During his visit, the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence awarded Altman its first honorary doctorate, recognising his leadership in advancing AI and supporting innovation across research, technology, and business. Based in Abu Dhabi, the university is the world’s first graduate-level research institution dedicated to AI, with a mission to develop international talent and leadership in the field.

The UAE has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence as part of its long-term plan to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil. The country’s strategy is centred on building an innovation-driven, knowledge-based economy with AI at its foundation. Key priorities include advancing local AI research, fostering collaboration between the government and private sectors, and forming global partnerships to access cutting-edge technologies.

One major step in this direction is the creation of one of the world’s largest AI data centres, which will play a central role in driving AI adoption across industries. In addition, the UAE is using AI to preserve and modernise the Arabic language through digital dictionaries, linguistic tools, and region-specific language models to ensure Arabic maintains a strong digital presence.

On the global stage, the UAE has also been deepening ties with the United States. A recent announcement confirmed plans for a large joint AI campus in Abu Dhabi, revealed during US President Donald Trump’s visit in May. This initiative highlights the UAE’s approach of combining technological progress with diplomatic partnerships to strengthen its role in the AI sector.
