IBM and BharatGen have announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate the adoption of artificial intelligence in India, powered by BharatGen’s sovereign multimodal and large language models designed for the country’s linguistic and cultural landscape.
The partnership aims to combine IBM’s expertise in data, governance and model training with BharatGen’s mandate to develop inclusive, India-focused multimodal and large language models rooted in local context and values.
Focus on Indic innovation
The initiative will develop and scale multimodal and language-specific AI models, expanding their applications across education, agriculture, healthcare, banking and citizen services.
As part of the agreement, BharatGen and IBM will create solution templates for India-specific use cases by combining BharatGen’s models and data with IBM’s technologies, including IBM Granite models. They will also build demonstrations and templates for retrieval-augmented generation and targeted domains on IBM Watsonx and Red Hat OpenShift AI.
Prof Ganesh Ramakrishnan of BharatGen said, “At BharatGen, we have been building sovereign AI models and an ecosystem that reflects the linguistic richness, cultural nuances and diverse needs of our people. This collaboration with IBM allows us to bring cutting-edge global research, scalable architectures and inclusive systems for India.”
He added, “With IBM’s strength in enterprise-grade platforms and our commitment to public-good AI, we are on a path to drive transformative solutions for empowering India’s digital journey across domains such as agriculture, finance, education and governance.”
Responsible AI and governance
The collaboration will also include the creation of a scalable data pipeline using IBM’s open-source tools enhanced with Indic-specific capabilities to simplify data preparation workflows. In addition, a governance framework based on IBM’s enterprise-grade model development methodology will be implemented to strengthen responsible AI development.
Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India and South Asia, said, “Through our collaboration with BharatGen, we aim to advance sovereign AI capabilities that reflect India’s diversity and deliver meaningful impact across sectors.”
Roadmap for India’s AI future
BharatGen’s large language model and foundation model roadmap is designed to meet both national and commercial needs. Its priorities include agriculture, education, healthcare, national security and finance, with a strong focus on supporting underserved Indian languages and dialects beyond the most widely spoken. The aim is to broaden digital participation and ensure equity across India’s diverse population.
