Microsoft has announced that it will begin automatically installing the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices starting in October 2025. The rollout will apply to all systems with Microsoft 365 desktop apps, except those in the European Economic Area. The deployment will begin in early October and is expected to be completed by mid November.
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app is designed as a central hub for accessing Copilot experiences and AI powered tools across Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Microsoft 365 applications. It also includes features such as Notebooks and AI agents. According to Microsoft, the new app will make it easier for users to find and use productivity enhancing capabilities.
“Starting in October 2025, Microsoft will begin automatically installing the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices that have Microsoft 365 desktop client apps,” the company said in a Microsoft 365 message center update. “This app provides a centralized entry point for accessing Copilot experiences and AI powered capabilities across Microsoft 365. This change simplifies access to Copilot and ensures users can easily discover and engage with productivity enhancing features.”
The app will appear in the Windows Start Menu and be enabled by default. However, IT administrators will have the option to opt out of the automatic installation. Admins can do so by signing into the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center, navigating to Customization > Device Configuration > Modern App Settings, selecting Microsoft 365 Copilot app and then clearing the checkbox that enables automatic installation.
Microsoft advised administrators to alert helpdesk teams and users before the rollout to avoid confusion and reduce unnecessary support requests. In some cases, users may already have the app installed, meaning they will only notice a new icon in the Start Menu without further changes.
The update follows Microsoft’s recent efforts to expand Copilot accessibility. In late September 2025, the company will add Copilot agents to the Edge browser sidebar, giving users quick access to AI assistance. A new setting has also been introduced to allow admins to pin the Copilot app directly to the Windows taskbar.
