India to Deploy 38,000 GPUs and Set Up 600 Data Labs to Build Strong AI Ecosystem: MeitY

India has announced major plans to strengthen its artificial intelligence ecosystem with the deployment of 38,000 GPUs at affordable rates and the establishment of 600 data labs across the country, according to Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary and CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

“India is committed to building a robust and inclusive AI ecosystem through the deployment of 38,000 GPUs at affordable rates and the establishment of 600 data labs to accelerate AI research and innovation. Embedding responsible and ethical AI frameworks while combating misinformation will be critical as we move forward,” Singh said while outlining the country’s strategic vision.

He stressed the need for developing responsible AI frameworks, fighting misinformation, and promoting an AI-first culture across organisations. Singh also shared that the CII AI Summit is a lead-up to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled for February 2025, and extended an invitation to panellists and delegates to participate.

At the same forum, Puneet Chandok, Chairman of the CII National AI Forum and President of Microsoft India and South Asia, highlighted India’s ambition to create a future-ready AI ecosystem. He pointed out how AI-driven agriculture could boost yields by 30 to 40 per cent while reducing costs by 30 per cent. He also called for structured AI roadmaps that focus on data frameworks, trust, security, and talent development, urging a shift from AI enthusiasm to practical action.

Arvind Kumar, Director General of the Software Technology Parks of India, MeitY, in his keynote address at the CII National Artificial Intelligence Awards Ceremony, noted that India’s AI ecosystem is thriving. With access to quality data, world-class institutions, and affordable computing resources, innovators are already building solutions for healthcare, finance, and other critical areas. He emphasised that GPUs are now available at rates as low as Rs 65 per hour, enabling startups and enterprises to develop scalable AI applications.

Kumar underlined that the ultimate goal of AI is to improve lives, promote inclusion, and address the country’s most urgent challenges through innovation.
