Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday called for Hindi to be used beyond administration and conversation, urging its adoption in fields such as science, technology, judiciary and policing. Speaking at the fifth Akhil Bharatiya Rajbhasha Sammelan, Shah said that deeper public connection can only be achieved when work in these sectors is carried out in Indian languages.
“Hindi is not just a spoken language or a language of administration. Hindi should also be the language of science, technology, justice and police. When all these works are done in Indian languages, then connection with the public is automatically established,” he said.
Addressing concerns over a language divide, Shah clarified that Hindi is not in competition with other Indian languages. He stressed that parents must pass on their mother tongue to children as it shapes their thinking ability. “As soon as you impose a language other than mother tongue on a child, 25-30% of his mind’s capacity gets spent translating it,” he explained.
Shah cited leaders including Dayanand Saraswati, Mahatma Gandhi, KM Munshi and Sardar Patel, who promoted Hindi without neglecting their own regional languages. He pointed to Gujarat as an example where Gujarati and Hindi have coexisted, crediting Gandhi and Saraswati for integrating Hindi into the state’s education system and helping students gain acceptance nationwide.
He also noted the role of technology in promoting Hindi, highlighting tools such as the Bahubhashi Anuvad Sarthi for translations and the expanding Hindi Shabd Sindhu dictionary. According to him, such advances will support Hindi’s wider use across disciplines while ensuring other Indian languages are preserved.
