GoPay users can now make payments at QRIS-enabled merchants in Japan after Bank Indonesia expanded its cross-border QR code payment system to the country in August 2025.
With this move, Indonesian travelers visiting Japan can pay at local merchants by simply scanning JPQR codes using the GoPay app.
GoPay, operated by GoTo Financial, already provides QRIS cross-border payment services in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. The expansion to Japan strengthens its regional coverage and offers more convenience to Indonesian users abroad.
Bank Indonesia is also piloting the connection of QRIS with China’s digital payment systems, with plans for a full rollout by the end of 2025.
According to the central bank, cross-border QRIS transactions reached 1.7 trillion rupiah, equal to US$103.6 billion, as of June 2025.
GoTo Financial stated that the GoPay initiative aligns with Bank Indonesia’s strategy to broaden access to QRIS cross-border payments and enhance seamless financial transactions for users.
