The much-anticipated Ram 1500 REV all-electric pickup truck will not see production. Stellantis, the parent company of Ram, announced that it has ended development of a battery-electric full-size pickup.
The company explained that slowing demand for full-size battery-electric trucks in North America led to the decision. In a statement, Stellantis said: “As demand for full-size battery-electric trucks slows in North America, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will discontinue development of a full-size BEV pickup. As part of this, Ram is renaming its REEV-powered pickup to Ram 1500 REV (formerly Ramcharger). This vehicle will set a new benchmark in the half-ton segment, offering exceptional range, towing capability and payload performance.”
The name change has created some confusion, but the shift is clear. Stellantis has cancelled plans for a purely electric pickup and will instead pursue an extended-range version. This truck will combine a battery with a petrol generator, delivering an estimated 690 miles of range.
The all-electric Ram 1500 was once a centrepiece of Stellantis’ strategy to introduce more than 25 new battery-electric vehicles in the United States by the end of this decade. Its future, however, has been uncertain for some time.
After a high-profile reveal at CES 2023 and subsequent showcases, Stellantis appeared to waver on its EV truck ambitions. The company originally aimed to start production in 2024, later delaying the launch to 2025. By the end of 2024, Stellantis pushed the timeline further, targeting 2026 instead. At that point, the automaker also scaled back features such as larger cabins with third-row jump seats and oversized battery options.
A Stellantis spokesperson confirmed that the extended-range Ram 1500 is still scheduled to enter production in 2026.
This move reflects the company’s attempt to balance customer demand with innovation in a shifting automotive market.
