WhatsApp Tests Structured Message Threads to Improve Chat Experience

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that introduces structured message threads, designed to make conversations easier to follow and more organised. The feature is currently available in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.25.8 and is being gradually rolled out to beta testers.

According to reports, the update redesigns the reply system so that each response automatically generates a thread under the original message. This ensures all related replies are grouped together, allowing users to follow discussions without having to scroll through unrelated messages in the main chat window.

A reply indicator has also been introduced within the message bubble, showing the number of responses linked to that message. By tapping the indicator, users can open the thread and view the entire chain of replies in one place. Within a thread, users can respond to the most recent message or reply directly to specific responses, which may appear as “Follow up replies.” This format is expected to preserve context, particularly in busy group chats where multiple conversations often overlap.

A previous report suggested that WhatsApp is also working on this feature for iOS, aiming to provide a consistent user experience across platforms in upcoming updates.

The new design will display replies in chronological order, giving users a clear view of how a conversation has progressed. It also allows people to catch up on missed discussions more easily by separating topics visually.

According to the report, “Structured conversations like these allow users to focus on the topics that matter to them, without being distracted by unrelated replies in the main chat.” The feature will only apply to new messages once it is enabled, but threads will remain structured even if some participants have not yet received the update.

As highlighted, this clean and organised layout is expected to enhance communication and reduce misunderstandings, making both group and individual chats easier to navigate.
