Beeline, a major Russian mobile operator, has opened a new telecommunications data centre in Helsinki. The facility aims to increase data transfer speeds and improve access to online services, including the popular messaging application Telegram.
The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency’s Cybersecurity Centre is keeping a close watch on the new facility. Classified as an internet exchange point, or IXP, the centre is relatively small compared to similar infrastructure in other countries but plays an important role in local network connectivity.
Beeline is owned by Vimpelcom, one of the twenty most valuable publicly traded companies in Russia. Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Western nations have introduced sanctions affecting several sectors, including technology and telecommunications. Canada has specifically imposed sanctions on all major Russian mobile operators, Vimpelcom among them.
This development comes at a time when cross-border telecommunications operations face growing scrutiny due to global security concerns. The new centre in Helsinki is expected to be a key part of Beeline’s efforts to expand its network capabilities.
