India is moving forward with the creation of a powerful superconducting quantum computing facility, designed to handle between 50 and 100 qubits. This advanced system will be located at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing in Bengaluru. It is part of a national effort to support academic institutions, research centres, and startups working in the quantum technology space.
The government has issued a formal tender inviting proposals for building the core quantum hardware. Along with this, the selected developers will also work on co-developing control electronics and designing quantum processors. The project requires the system to be functional within nine months of awarding the contract. The setup will also be capable of scaling up to 250 qubits in the future.
This facility is a key step under the National Quantum Mission, which was approved in 2023 with a total budget of ₹6,000 crore. The mission focuses on boosting India’s capabilities in quantum computing, secure communications, quantum sensing, and quantum materials. In the early stages, the mission will support systems in the 20 to 50 qubit range, eventually leading to full platforms ranging from 50 to 1,000 qubits over the next ten years.
Industry leaders expect that quantum and artificial intelligence technologies will start merging soon. One senior official from a top IT company said, “We may start witnessing talks on quantum AI probably in a year or two.”
This new quantum computing infrastructure is expected to play a major role in building India’s technological foundation. It will promote research, create high-skill jobs, and boost collaboration between government bodies, academic institutions, and private industry.
