OpenAI Announces $50 Million Fund to Support Nonprofits and Community Groups

OpenAI has introduced a new $50 million fund aimed at supporting nonprofit and community organisations. This marks the first major step following a recommendations report submitted by the company’s nonprofit commission, which was created in April to guide its charitable work.

The San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company said the fund will help build partnerships that apply AI to key areas such as education, healthcare, economic development and community organising. It will also support research and innovation led by local communities to use AI for public good.

This move comes as OpenAI works to change its corporate structure in order to raise the large investments needed to compete in the growing AI space. While making these changes, the company has stated that it remains committed to its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of all people.

Currently, OpenAI operates under a unique structure where its nonprofit parent organisation controls its for-profit business. The company plans to shift the for-profit part into a public benefit corporation, with the nonprofit entity becoming a shareholder. The nonprofit commission was formed to ensure this change stays aligned with OpenAI’s core values.

As part of their work, the commission interviewed over 500 nonprofit leaders and community experts to shape the direction of the fund and offer guidance on how OpenAI can serve the public interest while growing its business.
