Malaysia’s trade ministry announced on Monday that any export, transshipment, or transit of high-performance artificial intelligence chips originating from the United States will now require a trade permit. This new rule takes effect immediately.
According to the ministry, individuals or companies involved in such activities must notify authorities at least 30 days in advance if they are dealing with items that are not specifically listed on Malaysia’s current list of strategic items.
The ministry explained that this step aims to close any regulatory gaps as Malaysia considers whether to formally include high-performance AI chips of U.S. origin on its strategic items list.
“Malaysia stands firm against any attempt to circumvent export controls or engage in illicit trade activities by any individual or company, who will face strict legal action if found violating the laws.”
This move is part of Malaysia’s ongoing effort to strengthen controls around the semiconductor sector. The country has been under growing international pressure to prevent the flow of sensitive technology to destinations where it could be used for unauthorized purposes, particularly in relation to advanced AI development.
Earlier this year, Malaysia had also launched an investigation into whether its local laws were breached in the shipment of servers connected to a fraud case in Singapore. These servers were suspected to contain advanced AI chips that may fall under U.S. export restrictions.
The new permit requirement reflects Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining transparency and upholding international standards in strategic trade, while preventing misuse of advanced technologies.
