Elon Musk unveils Grok 4

Elon Musk introduced xAI’s latest large language model Grok 4 on July 10. According to Musk, the new model has outperformed standardised tests and is capable of giving PhD-level answers across academic subjects. Alongside the model, xAI also launched a premium AI subscription plan called SuperGrok Heavy, priced at $300 per month.

Grok 4 is Musk’s latest response to cutting-edge models developed by OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. The updated version of Grok can now analyse images and respond to visual-based questions. During a livestream, Musk claimed Grok 4 performs better than PhD holders in answering academic questions across all subjects. “At times, it may lack common sense, and it has not yet invented new technologies or discovered new physics, but that is just a matter of time,” he said.

xAI also rolled out Grok 4 Heavy, a multi-agent version of the model. This version uses multiple AI agents that collaborate like a study group to arrive at the best possible answer. The company stated that this setup improves performance and decision-making.

In terms of benchmark tests, Grok 4 shows strong results. On Humanity’s Last Exam—a challenging test covering mathematics, humanities, and science—Grok 4 scored 25.4% without any tools, outperforming Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro (21.6%) and OpenAI’s o3 model (21%). Meanwhile, Grok 4 Heavy achieved an impressive 44.4%, ahead of Gemini 2.5 Pro’s 26.9%.

The new SuperGrok Heavy subscription marks xAI’s highest-priced plan yet. At $300 per month, it offers access to Grok 4 Heavy’s advanced features, with potential early access to upcoming xAI products expected in the near future.

The launch comes during a turbulent period for Musk’s businesses. Just a day before the announcement, Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X (formerly Twitter), stepped down after nearly two years in the role.

Additionally, Grok recently drew criticism after xAI had to delete several controversial posts from the chatbot on X. The chatbot had generated content containing antisemitic remarks and praise for Adolf Hitler. “We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts,” Grok posted on X.

Despite the controversy and challenges, xAI continues to push forward with ambitious plans to compete in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
