SMFG Launches Agentic AI Venture in Singapore

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) has announced the launch of a new agentic artificial intelligence (AI) venture in Singapore, a strategic move reinforcing its commitment to digital transformation.

This new AI solutions company will focus on developing and implementing enterprise agentic AI solutions for corporate clients, initially catering to its banking unit, SMBC Group, before expanding its services to the wider market.

In a key appointment for this initiative, Ahmed Jamil Mazhari has been named Executive Advisor for AI Transformation. Mazhari will be instrumental in leading SMFG’s AI transformation efforts across critical hubs, including Tokyo and Singapore. His responsibilities encompass building a robust AI talent force, fostering internal AI proficiency, and modernizing SMBC’s digital infrastructure. Mazhari brings a wealth of experience, with 20 years of global leadership at prominent organizations such as GE Capital, Genpact, and Microsoft.

SMBC’s overarching ambition is to become an “AI-leading financial institution” by deeply integrating generative AI into its core business processes and operational frameworks. This SMFG’s significant digital push is supported by an initial IT investment of 800 billion Japanese yen, with 50 billion yen specifically earmarked for generative AI initiatives.
