Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has introduced a new messaging app called Bitchat that lets users send messages without needing an internet connection. Designed as a peer-to-peer communication tool, Bitchat operates without central servers or mobile networks, focusing on privacy and decentralisation. It is currently available in beta for iPhone users through Apple’s TestFlight platform.
Bitchat uses Bluetooth Low Energy mesh networking to allow smartphones nearby to connect and exchange encrypted messages. These Bluetooth clusters work within a range of around 30 metres. As users move around, their devices can link different clusters together, letting messages travel farther than the usual Bluetooth range. This makes the app useful in areas with no internet or during emergencies when networks may be down.
Unlike popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram, Bitchat does not rely on central servers or require users to sign up with an email or phone number. The app stores all messages locally on users’ devices and automatically deletes them after a short time, offering greater privacy and resistance to censorship.
How Bitchat works:
Bluetooth-based networking: It connects devices within a 30-metre range using Bluetooth mesh technology.
No internet required: Works without Wi-Fi, mobile data, or central servers.
Encrypted messaging: All messages are end-to-end encrypted and stay within the mesh network.
No user registration: Users can communicate anonymously without creating an account.
Temporary message storage: Messages are stored only on user devices and are deleted after a short time.
The beta version of Bitchat quickly reached its 10,000-user limit on TestFlight. Jack Dorsey has also shared the app’s whitepaper and beta invite publicly. The current testing phase is focused on improving battery efficiency and connection stability. Future updates will include Wi-Fi support to allow for sharing of media like photos and videos with higher bandwidth.
