Chennai to Build First Cable Stayed Bridge Over Adyar

The Greater Chennai Corporation is preparing to start construction on the city’s first cable stayed bridge over the Adyar River. This new infrastructure will connect Pattinampakkam and Srinivasapuram to Urur Olcott Kuppam near Besant Nagar, aiming to ease traffic and improve connectivity in the southern parts of the city.

A ₹20 lakh tender has been issued to appoint a consultant who will create a detailed project report. This report will include key details such as the placement of piers, design of ramps, traffic diversion plans, and surveys to assess encroachments along the proposed route.

The bridge, which is expected to span about 1.5 kilometres including its approach roads, will replace the old Broken Bridge. It is being planned to help reduce congestion along key stretches such as Greenways Road and Santhome High Road.

The new structure will include four lanes for vehicle traffic, a separate lane for cyclists, and pedestrian walkways. It is inspired by other iconic cable stayed bridges in India like Mumbai’s Bandra Worli Sea Link, aiming to combine visual appeal with practical use.

Several studies including traffic flow assessments, topographical mapping, and soil testing will guide the final design. The selected consultant will also be required to follow national guidelines and environmental rules, especially since the project area includes a protected estuary.

The project is intended to act as an alternative route between Marina Loop Road and Besant Nagar. Once completed, it is expected to significantly reduce travel time for daily commuters and improve access to coastal neighbourhoods.

Final designs and cost estimates will be completed after the feasibility study, and the required funding will be proposed in future state budgets.

This bridge is seen as a major step in Chennai’s urban planning efforts, highlighting a shift towards sustainable and long-term transport solutions for the city’s growing population.
