Hitachi Energy India has secured a significant order from Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd to supply 30 units of 765 kV, 500 MVA single-phase transformers. This order comes as India continues to expand its power transmission infrastructure to meet growing energy needs driven by renewable energy, industrial electrification, and electric transport.
The transformers will be manufactured at Hitachi Energy’s plant in Maneja, Vadodara, Gujarat, supporting the government’s “Make in India” initiative. The company noted that India’s demand for power transformers has risen at an average of 15 percent annually over the past two years.
“From a technology provider perspective, this shift helps us plan capacity investments, reserve supply chains, and ensure timely delivery,” said N Venu, Managing Director and CEO of Hitachi Energy India. He also highlighted how the company is combining its global expertise with local strengths to support India’s energy transition.
These ultra-high-voltage alternating current (UHVAC) 765 kV transformers are critical for transmitting large amounts of electricity over long distances with minimal losses. Once operational, they will be able to supply power to nearly 30 million households across the country.
Higher voltage transmission also helps reduce operating costs and improves the stability of the power grid, making it easier for utilities to meet rising electricity demands more efficiently. The transformers will be delivered according to Power Grid’s infrastructure rollout schedule.
In a separate update, Hitachi Energy recently achieved a major milestone by successfully testing a 765 kV/400 kV single-phase 250 MVA transformer filled with natural ester. This transformer is the first of its kind at this voltage and capacity, offering a safer and biodegradable alternative to traditional mineral oils.
Hitachi Energy India is listed on BSE and NSE under the symbol POWERINDIA. It is part of the global Hitachi Energy group headquartered in Switzerland, which operates in 60 countries with over 50,000 employees and annual revenues of $16 billion.
